The Newspaper From the Day You Were Born

Pen-and-ink drawing of a person seen from behind in an armchair by a window, reading a large hand-bound newspaper book open on their lap, with a birthday cake and lit candles on a side table beside them.

Somewhere in an archive there’s a newspaper printed on the very morning you arrived. It carries that day’s news, the sport, the weather, the advertisements and the price of things. For more than twenty years, Memorable Moments has been finding those editions for Irish families and turning them into gifts people keep.

Ask most people what was happening on the day they were born and they’ll shrug. Hand them the paper itself and they’ll be reading it for hours. That’s the quiet magic of this gift. It doesn’t just tell someone how much they’re loved. It shows them the world they were born into, and they work out the rest for themselves.

Pen-and-ink drawing of two hands resting on a slim burgundy hand-bound Memorable Moments Birthday Edition book, personalised in gold with a name and birth date, beside a birthday card and a slice of cake.

What you receive

Our special-date newspaper book is a reproduction of the full edition of the newspaper from the date you choose, taken from the archive. It isn’t a summary or a single front page, but the whole paper as readers saw it that morning. Each book is hand-bound by our partners at Kennys Bindery in Galway, a second-generation family bindery like ourselves, and finished with:

  • A reproduction of the full edition of the newspaper from the chosen date
  • Free personalised embossing of the recipient’s name on the cover
  • A personal greeting printed on the inside cover
  • A collection of major news and sport stories from that decade, so the day sits in its wider story

The book is €149.99, and we deliver nationwide, usually within three working days.

Choose from over 30 Irish newspapers

The right paper is usually the one they grew up with, the one that came in the door every morning or was read cover to cover after Sunday Mass.

National titles

  • The Irish Independent: if the date falls on a Sunday, choosing the Irish Independent brings you the Sunday Independent from that day
  • The Irish Times
  • The Irish Examiner: the Cork Examiner in older years and a natural choice for anyone from Munster
  • The Irish Press: much missed and full of character, and a favourite with readers who remember it
  • The Belfast Telegraph, The Irish News and the Evening Herald

Local and regional titles

For many people, the local paper is the real treasure. It carries the names, the parish notes and the county matches they’ll actually remember. Titles include the Anglo-Celt, Connacht Tribune, Kerryman, Limerick Leader, Meath Chronicle, Munster Express, Nenagh Guardian, Southern Star, Ulster Herald, Western People and many more. You’ll find the full list in the dropdown on the product page.

Many local papers are weekly. If no edition was printed on the exact day, we use the next available edition and still emboss the requested date on the cover. Our FAQ explains more about choosing between a national and a local title.

Who it’s for

Milestone birthdays

A 60th, 70th or 80th birthday is when this gift comes into its own. Someone turning 60 has lived through six decades of Irish life, and the newspaper from their first morning makes a wonderful starting point for the stories that come out at the party. See our ideas for 60th, 70th, 80th and 90th birthdays.

Wedding anniversaries

The same idea works beautifully for the newspaper from a wedding day. Our anniversary newspaper book (€149.99) can include both spouses’ birth dates alongside the wedding day itself, a lovely touch for a ruby or golden anniversary.

Retirements, christenings and Christmas

It also suits the paper from the day someone started work, the day a baby arrived, or simply a Christmas present for a parent who insists they want nothing. (See our Christmas gifts for parents.)

Prefer it on the wall? A framed front page

If you’d like something to hang, we can frame a page from the chosen date in an aluminium silver frame with a black mount, with a free personalised greeting above the masthead. Framed pages are available for the Irish Independent, the Irish Examiner (the Cork Examiner in older years), the Irish Press, the Belfast Telegraph, The Irish News, the Belfast News-Letter and local papers. The Irish Times is available as a newspaper book only. See framed pages →

For the sports fan

If they’d rather relive an All-Ireland than a birthday, our sports history books gather decades of great days. Choose from All-Ireland football finals, hurling finals, Irish rugby or Irish golf.

Curious about the year itself?

Our year-in-review articles tell the story of Irish life year by year, through politics, sport and entertainment. Start with 1978.
